Preservation Information The unit was made briefly operational in 2008/2009, however persistent issues with the unit, its non standard characteristics and a review of earlier plans meant the unit saw very little use, only running on a handful of occasions. The vehicle quickly fell out of use. In 2010, it was agreed to sell the vehicle to individuals of the resident DMU Group, who decided to dismantle it for spares to ensure the future of their Class 104 fleet. However with only the resources to strip one vehicle at a time, partner 977391 was stripped first, so 977392 was stored awaiting its fate. January 2012 saw the vehicle dragged back out for final stripping including the larger items such as engines and final drives. By the following month, the vehicle was a stripped shell and was sold for scrap, finally being cut up on site in March. The bogies lived on after being sold to the North Norfolk Railway. However the heavy modifications made to the frames made them difficult to re-use, so the frames were themselves cut up and the (easier to store) wheelsets retained for spares for the Class 101 fleet. Many of the final drive components were reused during 2017, aiding the overhaul of Class 101 DMBS 51228. |
