Preservation Information
142029 was the third Class 142 to be preserved (in 2019). It was purchased by the Chasewater Railway who had been without a DMU, working under its own power at least, for over ten years. Of the 96 sets built, 142029 was one of five sets that made it through to withdrawal with the least number of internal modifications or refurbishment work, making it a particularly "original" candidate for preservation. Its last home was at Newton Heath (Manchester) under Northern Rail before preservation and movement to the Chasewater Railway in December 2019.

Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a great delay before 142029 could be used in passenger service, although it was kept operational.

Finally, in April 2022, 142029 finally made its preservation passenger debut, when it was chartered by the Birmingham University Railway Society.

142029 is currently described as in occasional passenger use owing to the fact that is it not as presentable as it could be.

Future Plans
142029 requires some restoration work to make it more presentable for regular passenger service. It is expected that this work may be forthcoming once work to sister set 142030 has been concluded.
