Preservation Modifications
The cab has a transformer fitted so that the front marker and destination lights are operational on a mains supply.

Preservation Information
51177 was the first of the three Class 101 cabs that were removed and preserved to be restored.

Shortly after preservation in 2004, the cab was moved to the Midland Railway Butterley where it was restored to BR Blue with full yellow end during early 2005. The bodywork was made good during this period and the original 2-character indicator box reinstated. As it was done on a contract, the cab was soon completed.

During summer 2005 the cab was moved to its new home, via Stoke-on-Trent, to a private house in Ashton-under-Lyne. It was installed on a platform and original plans were to build in a simulator however this did not materialise.

Between 2008-2015 the cab was used a workshop by a family member who sadly passed away in 2015. The cab was primarily used to produce mugs for Retro Railtours.

Since 2015, the cab has been used as a store room as the owner has moved away from the family home with work commitments.

Future Plans
To maintain as a static feature. The current occupants of the house may look to move in the future, at which point the cab will require rehousing. It is not however for sale. The current owner has noted that if it does relocate, it would be desirable to have it in a location where it can be displayed more publicly.

M51177 looking festive, still watertight and in good condition after 15 years on display on its little platform in the garden! 12/19. James Palmer

51177 part way through restoration at Butterley. The 2-character box has already been reinstated and the bodywork is well progressed, 26/3/05. Stephen Hughes

Interior

The interior of M51177, complete with mug sublimation machine. Surely that's a unique use for a DMU! James Palmer
