Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway

The Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway is an embryonic preservation scheme based in South Wales. As part of the regeneration of ex Caol Mining communities, the society set up a base at Cynheidre on a 12 acre site. An impressive shed has been erected which is used to work on rolling stock and shield it from local vandalism.

The group have 1 mile of running line but regular passenger operations are yet to begin. Some First Generation DMU vehicles have featured from the beginning, but none of them were made operational and certain vehicles were later sold on as their restoration was seen as too geat a task. One single unit however remained as a longer term prospect.

In 2021 the landscape changed somewhat with the addition of "ready to run" second generation Class 142 & 143 sets. 142006 was notable for being the only Welsh configured Class 142 to survive, with unique "Arriva interior".

Upon the arrival of the Class 142, all the DMU sets were grouped together under one group: The South Wales Railcar Group.

The railway is also home to The Cab Yard, a museum deicated to saving cabs and larger sections of scrapped vehicles. Within their collection are several salvaged DMU sections.
