Preservation Information
142001 was both the first Class 142 to be built (in 1985) and the first to be preserved (in 2019), having been designated for preservation for the nation within the national collection. The set was delivered fully operational from its last operator, Northern Rail, to the National Railway Museum's Shildon site still carrying its contemporary purple Northern livery. Its last mainline depot was Newton Heath in Manchester.

However 142001, despite being intended for use on passenger rides, was instead placed on display outside the museum, though it was still regarded as in operational condition by the museum.

142001 remains on static display but in operational condition. It has yet to carry any passengers in preservation.

Future Plans
The NRM's published collection policy shows 142001 as being maintained in an operational condition to offer short rides at either its York or Shildon museums.
