Preservation Information
142003 was preserved with much secrecy in April 2020 when a batch of eight Class 142 units were transferred to Eastleigh Works for component recovery. Not initially considered preserved, rumours persisted and eventually, once various other sets had been scrapped, it was realised that 142003 was one of three sets retained, reportedly by Locomotive Services Ltd.

142003 was the first of the sets to see any evidence of preservation, when it was contract repainted on site back into as built GMPTE Orange livery, the first time that livery had been seen in preservation.

142003 remains at Eastleigh Works with no formal announcement by its owner as to their plans for the set in the future.
