Preservation Information 142027 was the 12th Class 142 to be "preserved" . It was purchased as a source of spare parts by the Chasewater Railway who had recently received 142029 & 142030 for passenger services having been without a DMU, working under its own power at least, for over ten years. 142027's last home was at Newton Heath (Manchester) under Northern Rail before preservation and movement to the Chasewater Railway in February 2020. Careful stripping of components started immediately after arrival, with work concentrating on one vehicle initially, the second remaining intact. During summer 2020 underframe equipment was removed from the first car and carefully stored to provide vital spare parts for 142029 & 142030's future.
Future Plans To continue to strip the first vehicle from 142027 for spares, it is intended that not much will be left at the end to actually scrap! The second vehicle is to remain intact until the first is fully dispatched, after which attention will turmn to the second vehicle. As the second car has the more usual seated lobby (the car being stripped at present has a luggage rack lobby), it is intended to keep the lobby and cab section complete and adapt it to become a museum exhibit, possibly creating some sort of simulator effect in the future. So 142027 may will live on, both in a museum format and within 142029 & 142030.
