Class 100 (3 vehicles)
Built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company as 2-car sets in 1957, these vehicles had an unusual construction and distinctive external appearance. Despite having standard mechanical equipment, the small class size led to fairly early withdrawals with most being scrapped in the 1970's & 1980's.
However their slightly earlier withdrawal led to six Class 100 vehicles becoming early subjects of preservation, seeing extensive use in the late 70's & 80's. However wear & tear lead to all six seeing a decline in condition with the last example carrying passengers in the early 1990's.
A 20 year period of universal decline then followed, starting with the scrapping of two vehicles in 1991 and the remaining four placed into storage at several locations around the UK, with the threat of disposal raised on several occasions.
In 2011, some hope emerged after the Llangollen Railcar Group started the major restoration of the now sole surviving 2-car set, a continuing project that has spanned over a decade.
Following a further disposal in 2016, there are now just three vehicles remaining meaning only one operating set can be recreated in the future. It is hoped that restoration progress will enable a single class 100 set to in time return to passenger use in a sustainable condition.
