Class 153 (3 vehicles)

The Class 153 units were the Second Generation era's answer to the Class 121/122 "bubble cars". Originally built in the late 1980's as 2-car Class 155's with Leyland derived body design on top of the "Sprinter" family underframe, their life was short before conversion in the early 1990's saw the majority of sets split up and small cabs inserted into the ends to create twice as many single units.

The class enjoyed 30 years of successful and reliable service as part of the wider Second Generation fleet, both operating lightly used services and strengthening other units in multiple formations. Eventually their small capacity and lack of disabled accessible toilets made them early targets for withdrawal and the class became the first of the bogied second generation fleet to be removed from service in significant numbers.

Many remain in use on the mainline with others in storage so it is expected that more will enter preservation as time passes.
