Preservation Information
142004 was the 31st Class 142 to be preserved (in 2021), its last home was at Newton Heath (Manchester) under Northern Rail before preservation and movement to theTelford Steam Railway in April 2021 following a period in store. 142004 was one of the first Class 142's known to be set aside for preservation, but the plans of its future were kept private for over a year and 142004 ended up being one of the last two Class 142 sets still standing on mainline depots, latterly stored at Heaton depot. It joined recently preserved Class 144 144013 and 142058 on the railway.

Due to complications with the Covid pandemic and staff traction training it was quite some time before 142004 made its preservation passenger debut, however it was maintained in operational condition up to the big day in April 2023.

142004 then operated occasional running days on the Telford Steam Railway but was stored out of service by 2025 having suffered some minor issues which were unable to be fixed at the time.

Following around a year in storage, 142004 relocated to the Cambrian Railway at Oswestry where it continues to reside.
