Preservation Information
142023 was the 28th Class 142 to be preserved. It was purchased privately for the Plym Valley Railway and moved to its new home in early 2021. Its last home was at Heaton (Newcastle) under Northern Rail before preservation. On arrival the set was deemed in good condition and only had minor faults to attend to before it was ready for passenger service.

In June 2021 the set made its preservation debut.

In 2024, some bodywork was undertaken to DMS 55564 with a partial repaint into a red primer, along with some cosemtic work to DMSL 55614. Over the following winter, the exterior works continued with the set emerging in February 2025 sporting Brown & Cream livery, the first in preservation to do so. Known as "Skippers", this interesting colour scheme was applied to the thirteen Class 142's delivered new to the South West, but proved short-lived after the sets were transferred north owing to them being unsuccessful on the steeply graded and twisty Cornish branch lines. With 142023 being a genuine example to be built in "Skipper" colours (one of six preserved), it proved most historically fitting for the set to be returned to this livery, especially with the set being preserved in Plymouth. The repaint was therefore well received by enthusiasts.

142023 remains an operational part of the Plym Valley fleet and shares services with 143618, occassionally running in 4-car formations on special days.
