Preservation Information
142036 was the 21st Class 142 to be preserved, its last mainline depot being Newton Heath in Manchester. The preservation of 142036 brought the number of preserved Class 142 vehicles up to 42, meaning that the class was tying with the legendary Class 101 as the third largest DMU class in preservation. After withdrawal from service 142036 was stored for a time, being saved and moved to the East Kent Railway who had abandoned the use of first generation DMU's three years previously. It was preserved as a good value and reliable form of traction to secure the long term future of the railway, and joined classmate 142017 which had arrived 7 months previously.

Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a great delay before 142036 could be used in passenger service, although it was kept operational.

In April 2022 the set finally made its preservation debut, also being repainted during that year into the East Kent Railway's own house livery (blue).

Since then 142036 has operated service trains regularly on the line.
