Preservation Information
142038 was the 13th Class 142 to be preserved, its last mainline depot being Newton Heath in Manchester. After withdrawal from service it was stored for a short time at Worksop where it was reportedly intended to be included in a three set rail convoy to the Wensleydale Railway. However a problem with 142038 led to it being left behind, being preserved and moved to the Mid Norfolk Railway later the same month where it joined an exisiting fleet of first generation railcars.

Although operational at the time of arrival, 142038 was assessed and found to be in much poorer condition than expected, so consequently never entered passenger service, instead being stored awaiting a descision on its future. The railway originally stated that over time, they planned to restore 142038 to its original British Rail "Provincial" livery, and use it on special events and driver experiences. However, this role was taken by 142061 instead and 142038 became a spares donor.

142038 has been retained in long term storage.

Future Plans
Unknown, although it is now considered unlikely that 142038 will be restored for use and is expected to continuie to provide spares for 142061.
