Preservation Information Much restoration work on the vehicle was completed during this period, most notably internal "derefurbishment" which involved the removal of orange Formica and strip lighting amongst other modifications. In 1995 the vehicle (along with the entire Class 110 set) was repainted into BR Green. In 2001 the set was the star of the annual railcar convention, being used for the driver experiences. In 2003 the set was relocated to the Wensleydale Railway where at one point it was seeing daily use. The vehicle operated both as a 110 set and with other vehicles on the line until being withdrawn for repairs. In 2009 a siezed engine was swapped with one from 51842 and 51813 was returned to traffic, paired with Class 117 51400. In 2010, the vehicle saw use in the summer as a loco hauled 4-car set with 59500, 59509 & 50746. In 2011 51842 had returned to traffic and 51813 was paired with it once again. In 2012, the set was increased to 3-cars via the use of Class 117 TCL 59509 but this was only for a short period and 51813 fell back out of use again. 51813 returned to its former home the East Lancashire Railway in 2016 where it was better placed to receive overhaul work by its owner. However at the time resources were being spent on the overhaul of partner 51842, so 51813 continued in storage to await overhaul. May 2017 saw 51813's overhaul started. The cab interior was first to be tackled with parts showing signs of water ingress being removed to assess the extent of the damage. During July the cab wiring and parts of the desk were carefully moved to facilitate the welding repairs required to the front end. These repairs continued throughout the summer months, and September was spent reassembling much of the cab interior following the repairs. During the summer, progress had quietly also been made on stripping down the bodysides and roof, repairing where requirted and then preparing for repainting. In October the roof resealing and repainting work was completed and the headcode box glass refitted. The coats of gloss were also being applied to the body, with time becoming increasingly critical as it was intended to finish the vehicle for the railway's Railcar Gala the following month. In November 2017 the full 3-car set was relaunched into passenger service. In summer 2018, 51813 and 51842 visited the Llangollen Railway as a 2-car set as the star guest for their Railcar Gala, returning home shortly afterwards. In Autumn 2020 51813 (along with the rest of the set) was put up for sale by its owner. However after a year on the market with no takers, an interim arrangement with the East Lancashire Railway was made which allowed the set to still be used on the railway whilst remaining available on the market. After around a year out of use, the set was used again in November 2021. However 51813 continued to see little (if any) use and the bad luck continued when repairs were required that demanded a vehicle lift, putting 51813 out of service. 51813 is currently stored awaiting a lift to allow repairs to be completed. It also remains for sale. |
