Preservation Information
51990 was withdrawn from passenger service in September 1992 but saw several years service as Sandite car 977830. 51990 was purchased from Millerhill in 1996 with partner 52030 for the Strathspey Railway.

Two months after arrival, 51990 & 52030 made a brief run in preservation in multiple with the operating set at the time, 52008/56047, but no serious restoration work had been undertaken.

Some limited work was undertaken in 1996 including cleaning out the Sandite residue, and some welding was done to body panels with preparations made for repainting into green. Some mechanical repairs were also completed, but the project was later abandoned.

Since then, 51990 has been used as a store and source of spare parts for 52008 & 52030, which were both returned to service.

In 2019 the further deterioration of 51990 was significantly reduced, following the building of a rolling stock storage shed at Boat of Garten, able to accommodate both operating and stored DMU vehicles amongst other coaching stock.

51990 remains stored undercover and the owners have no plans to return the vehicle to operating condition.

Future Plans
51990 is unlikely to ever be restored to operational condition as many parts have been donated to other units.
